چکیده

In this paper the results obtained using two validated gaschromatographic procedures on drinking water for the determination of trihalomethanes are compared. The volatile compounds, chloroform (CF), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM) and bromoform (BF) were detected by purge and trap capillary column gas-chromatography with electrolytic conductivity detector ( ELCD) and the simple and rapid gas-chromatographic method by electron capture detector (ECD) after liquid-liquid extraction with n-pentane. For purge and trap ELCD method the response for the volatile compounds was linear for the concentrations of 0.5 to 40 μg/L. For liquid-liquid extraction ECD method the response was linear for the concentrations of 0.5 to 100 μg/L. The comparison of both methods was achieved by analyzing samples of drinking water collected in the city of São. Paulo, Brazil. The ratios of concentrations obtained by the two methods (ECD/ELCD) were as follows: l.l3 ± 0.9 for chloroform; 0.93 ± 0.15 for BDCM and 0.92 ± 0.17 for DBCM. Bromoform was not detected in the drinking water samples. The ratio of 1.08 ± 0.047 for total triahalomethane THMt ( the sum of the three compounds) shows the equivalence of the compared methods.

Investigation of Trihalomethanes in Drinking Water of Abbas Abad Water Treatment Plant

Introduction: Chlorination is the most common and successful method for disinfection of drinking water, especially in developing countries. However, due to the probability of formation of disinfection by-products especially Trihalomethanes (THMs) that are known as hazardous and usually carcinogenic compounds, this study was conducted to assess the investigation of THMs in drinking water of Abba...

Occurrence of Trihalomethanes, Particularly Those Containing Bromine, in Polish Drinking Waters

Trihalomethanes (methane derivatives containing chlorine and/or bromine) have been determined in drinking waters in Upper Silesia the most industrious and most populated region in Poland. Halomethane content determination is based on Capillary Gas Chromatography (CGC) with Electron Capture Detector (ECD), while these compounds' isolation from waters by Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) is base...

Trace level haloacetic acids in drinking water by direct injection ion chromatography and single quadrupole mass spectrometry.

Chlorine has been widely used to kill disease-causing microbes in drinking water. During the disinfection process, organic and inorganic material in source waters can combine with chlorine and certain other chemical disinfectants to form disinfection by-products. The kind of disinfectant used can produce different types and levels of disinfectant byproducts in the drinking water, such as trihal...
